The Hay River Harbour restoration project is set to begin its second phase in July 2024. In this phase, the remaining sediment will be removed from the channel. An Indigenous auditor’s program has begun in 2023 and is planned to continue in 2024. A long-term dredging feasibility study will also be completed this year.

The Union of Northern Workers and Salvation Army Yellowknife have ratified a new collective agreement, valid until March 31, 2028. The new agreement includes wage increases, vacation travel assistance, and a letter of understanding regarding workplace violence.

The City of Yellowknife is allocating an additional $2.7M annually for four years to address homelessness. The money will be available April 1, 2024, helping multiple municipal committees to plan and implement various initiatives that address homelessness and support people without homes in Yellowknife.

The Tulita health centre construction is expected to continue in May 2024, though, no date has been set for the centre to open. The health centre was planned to open in 2021, but due to supply chain issues, labour shortages, and travel restrictions induced by the COVID-19 pandemic hindered the project.

Hay River’s 10-year capital plan is short about $88M, or $9M per year. The 10-year plan includes flood and wildfire recovery or mitigation projects, a new water treatment plant, a land development project, a new town hall, and work on the dump and golf course. However, without sufficient funding, many of these projects are not able to move forward.

A daycare in Tsiigehtchic, NWT, closed temporarily due to staffing shortages. Reportedly, wages for early childhood educators are often lower than wages for comparable jobs. The NWT government provided $4.6M between 2022-2023 to enhance early childhood educators’ wages. However, several factors such as lack of housing and education support contribute to the shortage of daycare workers.

The Union of Northern Workers (UNW) and the NWT government have still not reached a new collective agreement after five rounds of negotiations. As a result, a mediator has been appointed. Over 5,100 UNW members work for the NWT government, whose collective agreement expired March 2023 and remains in effect until a new agreement is in place.
